[Speaker 0 ]: It is. [Chair ]: You are live. This is the senate education committee on at three o'clock in the afternoon of January twenty second. We've just finished a joint hearing with the House Committee on Education with regard to the education quality standards, and we're meeting just very briefly to take up something that said it's weeks. So I asked what you suggest we would take up, which is to to have, get moving on to appointments for the board. [Speaker 0 ]: Yeah. So these are the, governor's recommendations for, positions of, the board of libraries, the community high school Vermont board, and the State Board of Education. So this is just a matrix that I'll maintain until we finish. What happens here is we receive nomination letters. They come from the Governor's office. Our job as a committee, and there's five, so far there's a total of five nominees. Our job as a committee is to contact these folks and reach out to them. Okay. I have the contact information. One of our drills in a minute will be to take these nominees and delegate them to different members of the Committee. So that one person doesn't have to do much. So the drill is to reach out, contact them, but beforehand do a little research, Look on LinkedIn, look on Facebook, look, do a search online. Get a little background. You can request in your highlight to the individuals. So when you contact them, you can ask them for a copy of your of their, resume and any kind of background they might offer and use that when you actually do the contact, you know, the call. They and it is recommended you do a call. You know, some folks have done, you know, email contact and such, but you you learn a lot more in the process if you actually just would, you know, reach out. So Can [Speaker 2 ]: we know if any of these people [Speaker 0 ]: have actually been on this point before? No. I don't know. There's there's no indication. That's so when you first reach out, ask those questions and say, hey, look, I got your contact information from the governor's office. You've been you've been nominated to the Board of Libraries. And just you can ask them those initial questions right up front. Have you have you done this before? Are you interested in doing it? Can I have a copy of your resume? No. By the way, I'd like to set up a phone a phone contact with you on such and such a date and then have that conversation. So that's the contact point or portion. Then we, whoever has the individual nominee comes back into the committee during committee process and you brief the the nominee. Okay. So I've got, James Saunders from Berry, Board of Libraries. I contacted him. He's interested. He's, his you know, here's a couple highlights of his resume, you know, maybe some other information you may have gleaned off of LinkedIn or or wherever. And then you recommend, support for the nomination or not. Maybe the person is not interested. So your recommendation to the committee is no. We take a vote. The vote goes back to the Secretary of the Senate and then gets recorded in the journal. And depending they all get voted on, they may get voted on as a package, maybe all five at one time, and you don't have to necessarily then brief the full Senate, but they may pull one or two out and have whoever is the, let's just call it the committee sponsor, the committee delegate to the brief, the Senate on the nominee. K? It's more about typically, that happens more in a contentious situation, you know, a particular judge or something like that, but it happens. You have to be ready you have to be ready for that process. You brief here. K. You vote. We vote. You breathe. Potentially, be prepared [Chair ]: to breathe on the floor. So if what if they trickle out of here and they have pure material one at a time, do they just sit there until we sort of arrange them to be or the motion taken or No. [Speaker 0 ]: It just to me, I just this was helping well further when we did this previously, and they would just appear in the journal, you know, on on their initiative. And I frankly didn't watch it close you know, that close to see if they came out, like, the next day or within the week or whatever. But they did package them together, and I don't think except for maybe one instance they actually had us brief. And we had maybe twenty five thirty in that committee last year. [Chair ]: I guess, like, another way to ask that question is, do we wanna send them out of hearing groups? Or do we wanna [Speaker 0 ]: So I'll tell you the reality is, you know, Terry's gonna jump up. He's gonna do it Saturday. K? Maybe some other member may, like, okay. It's not the high priority, and they're they're doing something else, and it pops back up a couple weeks later and it's done. So it's gonna trickle out. Yeah. It's gonna trickle out. And by the end of the session, we got them all done. Okay. And we're happy and everybody walks on. Okay. K. There is one other one other recommendation in this in the process is that once the vote on the floor is done, contact whether it's a call or an email or whatever, follow-up with the nominee and tell them, hey. By the way, you know, we just finished your whole process and you caught back up. Some of these guys were nominated back in April and May. K? But for whatever reason, they didn't the nomination didn't get given to the committee or given to the state houses on that. [Chair ]: And the phone numbers [Speaker 0 ]: will So I'll no. We have them. Thank you, Will. I'll broadcast them. So what we're gonna do is so I I know that Senator Baumgart's requested the the board of library member from Weston, and I'm not sure how you ended up with Putney, but maybe you volunteered. I love Putney. Okay. [Chair ]: Oh, so [Speaker 0 ]: make oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That's one of my favorite stores. We don't have any And the other is the choice. Yeah. Okay. So the others, Barry, Shelburne, and Troy. Do do any of you guys have a preference? Thought we were gonna give Keisha Shelburn. She even Okay. Stop that because that's in her district. I'll do the Troy. I'll do the [Chair ]: show Greenwood. Okay. [Speaker 0 ]: I'll take this I'll take Saunders unless you wanna give it That's it. I'm good. You're on reversal. Yeah. You win. K. I'll take the next the first one, the next So you want me to take Saunders then? Yeah. Okay. And I'll so tonight, I'll pass you the contact information. We have email, and we have phones. Again, thank you, Will. And then and then, you know, it just use your common sense on on how you approach it. It's it's, you know, is the person interested, and are they qualified? That's that's basically what it's done. It ain't good to me. [Chair ]: And that's it. Okay. Well, actually, to be clear, this is we do have we do one more nominee. We have because we have secretary of science and I, and she's on the list, and I will use my I'll do my practice one first, but I'll do a better job. [Speaker 0 ]: I didn't see secretary of science. [Chair ]: But I you got misled by me. So [Speaker 0 ]: No problem. [Speaker 3 ]: Do we have a you may have already mentioned this. I apologize. But do we have a deadline or timeline? Yeah. [Speaker 0 ]: By the time you go home in May. Oh, okay. Yeah. It gotta be done done. Yeah. And then whatever, you know, I'm sure so we're gonna get more. So my recommendation is just remove it from your Yeah. [Chair ]: With us. I [Speaker 3 ]: just wanna make sure it wasn't two weeks from now. [Speaker 0 ]: No. That it [Speaker 3 ]: is not. So [Speaker 0 ]: we keep but we send the nominations up and then we vote on them to floor. Yep. So yeah. So definitely fine. Congratulations. Yay. So we're talking about talking about the nominees that have been given to us by the Governor for different boards. And, just in summary, this is something we want to reach out. I'm sure you've done this in other committees. But there's there's a Shelburne. [Speaker 2 ]: Can I just text Joan? [Speaker 0 ]: Yeah. Okay. This is usually what I do. K. Good. Good. [Speaker 2 ]: She's given me baby presents. Like, I don't know. [Speaker 0 ]: Okay. Good. So [Chair ]: you oh, so you know her? [Speaker 2 ]: Yeah. Yeah. Just asking if she still wants to serve on this [Speaker 0 ]: board. Right. [Chair ]: Yeah. That's pretty sweet. Then then then you wanna talk to her. She'll yeah. I'll actually wanna talk to [Speaker 0 ]: her instead. [Speaker 2 ]: I see her. Yeah. I'll probably see her at the library on Monday. Okay. [Speaker 0 ]: Okay. Well, the next bit of the drill is be able to talk to her, talk about her for a couple minutes, you know, endorse her recommendation or nomination. Here. Not on the floor now. Right. Here. Okay. And then be prepared to do it on the floor as well. Doesn't happen often. Mhmm. [Chair ]: But if [Speaker 0 ]: they pull that name out, her name out, and said we wanna for whatever reason, we wanna spotlight on this one. [Speaker 2 ]: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Okay. [Speaker 0 ]: And you'll get heads up on that. You'll get a couple days heads up. Okay. So serious. Well, I don't know. Just try. [Speaker 3 ]: Anything serious, like, is David. [Speaker 0 ]: Yeah. It's all serious. Yes. Sure. Okay. Gotcha. [Speaker 2 ]: I can see how you manage lots of projects. Yeah. [Speaker 3 ]: I'm confident. [Chair ]: Yes. Very very helpful. I'm glad to thank you for doing this. I have nothing else to do, so we just let you do this quickly. And because we have we're gonna be saving [Speaker 0 ]: for another hour or more. [Chair ]: I think I heard this is gonna take a little while for them to get their own signed up, so we're not gonna be coming from three forty five to five, anyway. [Speaker 0 ]: Can I ask if [Speaker 2 ]: I didn't anticipate that the governor was speaking? No. Okay. [Chair ]: I think well, I don't know. [Speaker 2 ]: Yeah. Yeah. Somebody said I need to see the governor. [Speaker 0 ]: In the [Chair ]: secretary's office. [Speaker 2 ]: Yeah. That's what I thought too. I'm gonna be gonna record this. [Chair ]: I I don't I assume it will be a little bit. It's gonna be I'm sure it'll be live streamed because it's public, and I assume, therefore, it will be [Speaker 0 ]: Just like you said. Mhmm. Just like these, it will be. Yeah. And [Speaker 2 ]: so Yeah. I'll come back and because I don't hear us [Speaker 0 ]: a little bit. Sometimes, sitting way up in the corner. I'm trying to log in. [Chair ]: We'll go down the well in the house. [Speaker 0 ]: Oh, to be able to see the screen today. That's why we're not orbit lining up tomorrow. We're just gonna gaggle in. [Chair ]: Oh, and I'm glad you said that because we should all be in there by three forty. [Speaker 0 ]: Gonna do maybe what? Gaggle. Gaggle. I was gonna have a few terms, but we're live, so believe it or not. [Chair ]: How do you think we are done? Anybody have anything else? So Will and I are gonna spend a few
